Sarita's Srubs for Nursing Students

Throughout our existence in this enormous, yet, small world, we will meet persons that will bring about a change in us. Changes that will either bring about a positive or a negative outcome. Changes that will either influence our way of thinking, our way of analyzing, or our way of behaving. Whatever these changes are , it is just a matter of the way in which we will perceive it and the way we will embrace it. 

As nursing students, changes are always occurring in our everyday routines. The plans and outcomes of our daily routines are never constant. They keep on changing with the test, trials, and struggles that we have to go through. Nevertheless, the constant support that we need in our changing life is always there. The instructors are always willing to assist those who show that they need the assistance and can improve with it. Our colleagues are always there as well... they are there to show support, they are there to scold, to make you smile, to help in stressing you more...they always make the learning process an easy and fun one.

One day, as I was talking to a special lady, she told me that she knew somebody who would be willing to assist me with nursing scrubs and even make some for sale and at a low price. She said I would have to go to her house and explain to her how I would like to have the nursing scrubs made. 

I went to see Mrs. Sara Morris. I would have never thought I would have so much fun being there with her, but I did. After taking a picture with her, we sat down around the table drinking a hot cup of tea. She told me about the book she was reading and her experiences as a nurse (Mrs. Sarah is a retired American nurse). I talked to her about my self, about my dreams, my goals, and my aspirations. Her experiences, the love and passion for nursing, and her inspiration and motivation, have made me realized what is most important in nursing. To be a nurse you must have a love and passion for it, but most importantly, you must be able to love your patients. 

Today, Mrs. Sara is working on nursing scrubs. Our dream is to make scrubs that will beautifully designed and for sale at a reasonable price. This is only one of our dreams. Another one of our dreams is to open a nursing store that will provide nursing students with all necessary materials at a reasonable price--nursing scrubs, stethoscopes, nursing scissors... everything.

The San Pedro Foundation Logo

Lately, I have been working on a new logo for the San Pedro Foundation. As I was working on it I realized that the logo needs to exhibit characteristics of the island, education, and a foundation. Yes, we already have a logo, but then again, most people would admire a colorful logo. A logo that will attract the attention of the viewers and readers. A logo that as soon as you see it, you will know the meaning that it is trying to depict. This is the logo that we have:

What do you all think?

The palm trees, along with the sea and its sunset background gives it the characteristics of the island itself. The book and the three human clip art with graduation caps gives it an educational aura. Underneath it is the foundation. Are foundation images supposed to have only one layer? Does the amount of layers that the foundation image has matters? I am new to this so I am not so sure how many layers it is to have. I would really appreciate any opinions and comments in regards to the logo.

My Student Life

My name is Lucelli Sanchez, the main blogger for the San Pedro Foundation. I don't want to make this all about me, but I want to share you all what is life as a Nursing student at the University of Belize. First of all, I decided to make nursing my career because it is an area of health care that has captivated my interest since I was small. As I grew up, I enjoyed being able to help others. Seeing people sick, depressed, or sad, made me sad too because there would not be anything that I can do to help them, especially when it was related to a disease. My passion for caring for people and always seeing them happy made me more passionate for nursing. Having caring, compassionate, sympathetic, patient and loving characteristics, I decided that Nursing would give me the privilege to help others--educating them on do's and dont's so that they can keep a good health, help them to maintain their health or improve it, and if they are sick, nourish them back to health. Thus, that is why I was enrolled at the University of Belize. Life at the university is, well, it is fun and hard work. There are times of fun, stressed evenings, times of sadness, sleepless nights, ... there is time for everything. However, most of the time it is fun. Studying is fun when a study group is involved, when discussions are made while eating lunch together, when practicing is done with colleagues that are shy at first but then become used to being your "lab rats". Studying is better when I go to sleep early in the night and wake up early in the morning (3:00 a.m.). Studying is better when a snack is by my side and it is silent outside. Now, the stress comes with procrastination. I believe that procrastination is everybody's favorite at some time in life and it is no strange matter when it comes to education. At times it is great when I procrastinate because it helps me to think harder and my best ideas start flowing, but at other times, worrying about the deadline just make my neurons shutdown, ideas stop flowing, and stress takes place. sometimes stress appears because the instructors themselves procrastinated during the semester and then want to pile a mountain load of assignments when the semester is soon over. At other times, it appears when the colleagues are being irrational, noisy and uncaring for the lousy day that you had had. other times, it is just there. Sad moments are part of life and those too play an important role in our memories, because it is in those types of situations that we know who our friends are. A good friend will stand by your side at good times and also in the bad times, they wont care if you are poor or rich, if you are the smartest or dumbest person in the class. My friends are the greatest I know, and all nurses. They always stand by know, and knowing that they have that caring nature, I know they will be great nurses in the future. Sleepless nights are part of a nurse's life, even in a student nurse's one too. There are nights that we are given to much assignment for a week, and the only way to finish those assignments is to work through the night. At times, the assignment may be hard to understand, at other times it may be difficult to analyze, but they all get done. After assignments are finished we cross check our answers. My friends and I cross check answers through Facebook. Who says Facebook can only be used to chat? We all like Facebook not only because we can chat with each other at the same time, but because it makes assignments, proof reading, and discussion more fun, especially, when we are all at great distance away from each other. School is fun when there are good friends to share the memories with.

Essay Contest!!!

The US Embassy is hosting an essay contest to honor the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King. Belizean citizens may enter by 9 Feb to win a tablet computer device.

In honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month, the U.S. Embassy Belmopan is hosting an essay contest in Belize.

Submission: Drawing on the format from the famous I Have a Dream speech by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, tell us, in no more than 300 words, what your dream is for people and the future of Belize.

Who may enter: Open to Belizean citizens between the ages of 16 and 30.

How to enter: Send submissions to BelmopanPA@state.gov.

Deadline: February 9, 2014.

Prize: First place winner will receive a tablet computer device and their essay will be published in the local paper.

In Memory of Herman Penland

In Memory of Herman Penland

March 13, 1932 – January 18, 2013

Tomorrow, Saturday 18th, will complete one year that an active member of the San Pedro Foundation,  Mr. Herman Penland, passed away.

Mr. Herman Penland was born in Des Moines, Iowa USA to Eva and Robert Penland. He had two brothers. Herm’s adventurous spirit took him to California at the age of 16 where he joined the Navy and later met his wonderful wife Linda in college in 1958. They married in 1962.

In 1972 Herman moved the family to Karachi, Pakistan and that began their international life. After five years in Pakistan, the family moved to La Paz, Bolivia where he was the director of The American School for twenty years. After visiting Ambergris Caye for the first time in 1995, they fell in love with the island, purchased their first piece of property and immediately made plans to retire here. Two weeks into retirement in a hammock, Herman decided it was time to find a hobby on the island. He still felt he had more to accomplish in life and decided to purchase Southwind Properties. From real estate sales, Herman’s interest grew into development and he started working on plans for Belizean Shores Resort. In 2000 his son Doug moved to Belize to help Herman carry out his vision and dreams. After the success of Belizean Shores, Herman and Doug moved onto developing Belizean Cove Estates and Coco Beach Resort. Even at the age of 80 Herman was actively involved in planning the development of their current project, Venezia Del Caribe.

Mr. Penland was an active member of the San Pedro Foundation since January of 1999, serving as the president of the foundation. He led the foundation as president for at least 14 years. As President of the SPF, he was tireless in working to advance education opportunities in San Pedro. The board relies heavily on his years of experience in education.

Family was the first priority in Herman’s life. Herman is survived by his wife Linda Penland, his five children, Marcee, Pamela, Doug, Christi, and Katalina and three grandchildren Jake, Cole, and Jonathon.

Celebrating World Diabetes Day at the University of Belize

Everybody was getting ready to celebrate the World Diabetes Day, including the University of Belize 2nd year Nursing Students. Planning and organizing were done day and night. Preparations were made, activities were planned, and the students were kept busy.

To start off celebrating the World Diabetes Day, a Diabetes walkathon was made at the Belmopan City about a week before the actual event. It was estimated that with the help of the newly opened Belmopan Diabetic Association, at least a hundred people would attend. To our surprise, the number of those who attended was about half of the number estimated. Nevertheless, we were happy that there were at least a few who were willing to walk for a change.

A few days before the conference, decorations were underway, name tags were being prepared, a meal plan was done, activities and educational programs were organized, and everybody was getting ready so that  the conference would be a success.

The day came, and oh boy!, the auditorium was looking so beautiful. People were making a line to sign up and enter the auditorium and getting a name tag pinned on them. There were at least a hundred and fifty people present! We were happy of the number. There were different stalls in the building--food stalls, beverage stalls, information booths, free testing booths, and they were all full of people that were buying and inquiring information. It was such a beautiful view!

By the end of the day, we were all happy that the conference was a success! Most of the food was sold, and most of the people went home satisfied with the information that they had acquired that day. See the pictures below!

  

Then, on the week after, we had a World Diabetes Day Blue Monument Challenge. We made a big blue human circle by where the UB monument is. The lighting was a success with about fifty people joining to build the blue human circle.

This year we will be having another World Diabetes Day. We hope and pray that much more people will be assisting the event. People need to be aware of the causes and effect of diabetes, the signs and symptoms, and the limitations that diabetes causes in the life of those who suffer of it. As my educator says, " Education is the best prevention".

Who is Who at the San Pedro Foundation? Lucelli Sanchez

My name is Lucelli Ivannie Sanchez. I was born on April 9th, 1991, at the old Belize hospital in Belize City to my parents Esther and Ivan Sanchez . I am the eldest of four girls (Nirsa Leilani, 18, Emily Francis, 15, and Analuisa Esther, 9).

I grew up in the village of San Lazaro, Orange Walk, during my early childhood years. As my grandmother said, and my parents consented, I was baptized Catholic as a baby ( quite unjust... they took advantage I couldn't yet speak). Our house was close to my paternal grandmother. Living there was fun, sometimes I got scold or lashed as I was quite mischievous and energetic--what else can be expected from a girl that grew up with three boys? I seldom visited my maternal grandmother. I spent most of my childhood days with my father's family. I attended both the San Felipe Roman Catholic School and the San Lazaro Roman Catholic School. I excelled at primary school, and most people used to say that they cannot expect less as my father was a school teacher. As a student in the San Lazaro RC School I participated in the softball team, in the National Drug Awareness Contest (NDAC) and Spelling Bee Contest. Yes, I did had some victories, but did not managed to enter the national level. Sadly, my paternal grandmother died when I was eleven years old. Then, things started changing. I was transferred from the San Lazaro Roman Catholic School to the San Lazaro Methodist Protestant School. My mother and father started attending the Adventist Church and I was baptized that same year (this time it was me that made the decision). Whilst attending the SLMPS, I entered the Spelling Bee contest once again. This time I brought the victory home! I graduated as the valedictorian from the San Lazaro Methodist Protestant School. I started to attend the Belize Adventist College, located in Calcutta, Corozal, in the years 2004-2008. Whilst there, I made too many friends and met exceptional teachers. They were my inspiration each day. I also participated in the Food Contest. We managed to reach the national level, but sad to say, we lost. My parents moved to San Pedro Ambergris Caye in the year 2006, for some undisclosed reasons. I stayed at my maternal grandmother's house until the day that I graduated. I graduated as the salutatorian, with honors. I moved to San Pedro two days after my graduation in June, 2008. I started working as a waitress at a Pizzeria for a few months. Then I started training as a pharmacist. After two weeks of training, I officially started working as a trained pharmacist assistant at Quality Pharmacy, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. I have three years experience, and have been working on and off at the pharmacy ever since. I am proud to say the my boss (Dorothea Pineda) has been a great inspiration and a great teacher. I have learned so much from her.

I started studying at UB in the year 2009. I am presently doing my Bachelor's degree in Nursing. So far I am officially a second year student nurse. Reason being, I have taken two years off to work at the pharmacy and save money so that I could have continued studying.

While at UB I have made many friends, but this time, they are more like sisters to me. We have shared too many memorable experiences.

My lifelong goal, with God's help, is to finish UB as a RN (registered nurse), do my three years experience at the San Pedro Polyclinic, go to UWI, to earn my degree as either a pediatric nurse or as a physician assistant, then go to Africa as a missionary nurse.

I met Ms. Renita a few years ago, through my mother, who was an employee of hers at that time. Ms. Renita introduced me to the Foundation and Mr. ken and Mrs. Jenny Osterman. I applied for a scholarship about an year after knowing them. I am now proud to say that I am a proud recipient of a San Pedro Foundation Scholarship. I am also the main blogger for the organization since July, 2013! It has been quite an awesome experience.

A Successful Fundraising Event

Ken and Jenny Osterman recently had a Friends of Belize (FOB) Party to benefit the San Pedro Foundation (SPF).  The event was held at their neighborhood swimming pool and cabaña in Martinsville, New Jersey.

Ken and Jenny invited all their friends who had visited them in Belize since 1991.  They also invited friends who have had to listen to them talk about Belize for the past 22 years.  Almost 60 people attended!

Kelly McGuire attended the party and provided the entertainment. Kelly donated 20% of the sales of CDs and shirts to the SPF.  He also auctioned off a collection of CDs, shirts and hats to raise more money for the SPF.

Kelly played his guitar and sang for over three hours.  He was joined that night by John Haney, singing and playing the harmonica.  John lives in Brick, NJ, about an hour from Ken and Jenny’s house.  He and Kelly met in Key West, Florida about ten years ago.  He was a great addition to the show.

Guests enjoyed shrimp ceviche, guacamole, quesadillas, tomatillo salsa, barbecued chicken and spareribs, rice and beans, potato salad, cole slaw, pineapple, mango, coconut and watermelon, with flan and key lime pie for dessert.  Belikin beer was not available so substitutions were made.

Free-will donations from guests resulted in a total of $6,100 USD ($12,200 BZD) being raised for the San Pedro Foundation.

Ken stated the following in an e-mail sent to me: “I am happy to report that our FOB (Friends of Belize) Party was quite a success Saturday night. The weather was perfect.  The food was good. Kelly McGuire was...well, he was Kelly McGuire. Probably half of the 60 people there had not heard him before. Everyone left loving him and his music. A friend of Kelly's, John Haney, sat in for the night on harmonica. The man is great! And he is from Brick, NJ...about an hour from us. This was a fair amount of work for Jenny and me. But, boy, was it worth it!

Even through those few sentences he sent to me via e-mail I could feel the exitement he must have been feeling throughout the event. Just imagine, the lovely music buzzing in your ears while savoring a delicious platter of barbecue, tomatillo sauce, and some key lime pie! Boy, I wish I would have been there myself. I pray this may be one of the many successful fundraising events. There are more students out there who aspire a higher education but do not have the means to continue forward. The San Pedro Foundation needs more support!

The San Pedro Foundation is a non-profit organization, registered with the Government of Belize.  It exists to aid the youth of San Pedro who want to go on to higher education beyond the age of sixteen.

The SPF was formed in 1993 by property owners at the Belize Yacht Club.  Hank and Mary Agler, from Indiana, were the founders.  Mary had been a teacher in Indiana and knew the importance of a good education.  Hank passed away in 2008, but Mary still takes an active interest in the functions of the foundation.  Ken and Jenny have been board members for almost twenty years.

The scholarships are for two years and a total of $3,200 BZD ($1,600 US).

To this date the foundation has given scholarship money to thirteen students and many of those people have returned to live and work in San Pedro.

Most of the donations to the SPF come from visitors to Ambergris Caye who have thoroughly enjoyed their stay in San Pedro and want to do something to help out.

Current board members are Claudio Azueta, President; Renita Dellacca, Vice President; Ken Osterman, Treasurer; Jenny Osterman, Secretary and Anthony Anderson, Director.

Another Proud Scholarship Recipient!

 Lucelli

Lucelli grew up in the small village of San Lazaro, Orange Walk. She is the daughter of Esther Sanchez, a housekeeper, and Ivan Sanchez, a former school teacher. She is the eldest of four children. At an early age, Lucelli showed great interest in the scientific nature of life. She enjoyed long walks and observing the simple, yet complex and intriguing life of the creatures she saw. She also enjoyed experimenting. As Lucelli grew up, she discovered her love for science and a passion for the well being of others. Thus it was, that Lucelli chose to study in the field of science. In the year 2004 she enrolled at the Belize Adventist College, Calcutta. It was a challenging feat but at the end of those four long years the outcome was a successful one. She graduated with honors and as the Salutatorian from the Belize Adventist College in 2007. Subsequently, Lucelli moved to the island of San Pedro to live with her parents. That same year, she applied for a post as a pharmacist assistant. Her ethical values and dedication has earned her the trust of her boss and has allowed her to retain a part time job with her employer. She has been working at the pharmacy since then and has gained a vast experience  in the medical field. In the year 2009, Lucelli enrolled at the University of Belize, where she is majoring in Nursing and a minor in Pharmacology. Her aim goes further. She does not want to remain a registered nurse but wishes  to further her education and gain a Master degree and the title of Physician Assistant. It was not until the year 2011, that Lucelli gained a scholarship from the San Pedro Foundation. Back then her mother was working as a house keeper for the Changes in Latitude Bed and Breakfast Inn. The employer saw that her mother (now a single mother) was struggling to give her four daughters an education. And after seeing that Lucelli had the abilities of a good student who showed to have a promising future, she did not hesitate to offer Lucelli an application. Thus it was that Lucelli obtained her scholarship. Lucelli believes that any body can be who he/she wants to be with studying, a great passion, patience and practice. Why? Because all good things come to those who wait... practice makes perfect... passion allows somebody to do something because they themselves enjoy whatever it is that they like doing. It comes from their own mind and not as the result of other peoples influences... and  studying sets the road for learning and it will all be worth it at the end.

Angi grew up in the sunny island of Ambergris Caye, Belize. She is the eldest of 6 children and her mom is a seamstress. During her childhood, she always enjoyed going to school and learning new things.  The hard effort of her mother to ensure that her kids get educated has been her biggest inspiration. In high school years she worked in tandem to her studies. It was a very challenging feat but it became a good opportunity to learn and build character. She graduated with honors from the San Pedro High school in 2006. Subsequently, she began working as a waitress in a local restaurant and was later offered an office job by a relative of the restaurant owner. Her hard work and dedication earned her a timely promotion to take on additional responsibilities with greater opportunity for gaining experience in the work environment. Early in high school, she had discovered her love for accounting and in 2009 she decided it was time to move on and began working for a professional architect with focused responsibilities on accounting. She recently began her studies at the University of Belize in Belmopan majoring on Accounting. Her commitment and passion allowed her to retain a part-time job with her employer and secure assistance from The San Pedro Foundation to make her studies possible. She does not believe in complacency and strongly believes that one must continue to grow and learn because in the end, the only real security that we have in this world is our knowledge and experience.

Older days!

I was browsing through the internet today, looking for some information about  the San Pedro Foundation. I did find some and it dates way back to the year 1997! Three brilliant students were awarded scholarships! They were Mariana Ancona, Mary Gonzalez and Karen Martinez . Mariana Ancona used the scholarship to continue her tertiary education. She studied at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in the U.S., where she was to pursue her PHD in Science School. Ms. Ancona received one of the highest grade averages.

Karen Martinez graduated from Muffles Junior College in May of that same year majoring in Business Science. During her four semesters there, she made the Dean's honor list twice. She also received an award from the Hon. Ruben Campos for Youth Leadership and Community Service, and an award from the University of Quintanaroo, Mexico for her participation in a Master Plan Survey for the Orange Walk Town Board. Ms. Martinez used her scholarship to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Business Science at the University College of Belize (now referred to as the University of Belize).
Mary Gonzalez was enrolled at St. John's Junior College pursuing a General Studies course and majoring in Biology.

These three brilliant students were the first few who had received assistance from the San Pedro Foundation. They, as well as many of our young students have and should enjoy the benefits of the scholarships that the San Pedro Foundation offers!
 
Our young people are the future, and as Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945) states, "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future." This is the aim of the San Pedro Foundation—to assist our youth and provide them with a monetary foundation for higher education.

Graduates from high school seek to further their education either in the city or abroad.Unfortunately sometimes, financial difficulty handicaps a student to continue his/her studies putting to waste an intelligent mind.Fortunately, in San Pedro there is a vibrant organization willing to assist interested students in continuing their education by awarding them with scholarships.

The San Pedro Foundation (SPF) is a government registered, non-profit organization founded in 1993 by home owners at the Belize Yacht Club. Hank and Mary Agler were the main founders. Mary had been a teacher in Indiana and knew the importance of a good education. Hank passed away in 2008, but Mary still takes an active interest in the functions of the foundation. Their main goal has always been to raise funds that will aid in scholarship funding for young Belizean students. Having seen that the government of Belize provides for education only up to the age of sixteen, the San Pedro Foundation seeks to aid the youth of San Pedro who want to achieve a higher education. The Foundation offers scholarships of$3,200 Bz ($1,600 US) to students who have graduated high school and been accepted to institutions of higher learning. The scholarships are awarded in increments of $800 per semester and are contingent on the student achieving a passing grade average. Throughout its existence, the foundation has given scholarship to thirteen students and most of them have returned to live and work in San Pedro.

Most of the donations given to the SPF come from visitors to the island of San Pedro who have thoroughly enjoyed their stay and want to do something to help the community. A fund raising bar-b-que is held annually. In addition to offering scholarships, the Foundation has contributed to the R.C.School, the San Pedro Library and other community efforts.
